At the Erie Bloggers Meet Up Tuesday, I got talking with someone about Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW). How we got on that topic; I am not really sure. But it got me thinking I wonder how many former PFEWers are out there. So, if you had gone to PFEW feel free to add a comment or two about your experience in Lycoming. Also, beside Esther I don’t think I have talked to anyone in this picture since 1996. So, if you see yourself feel free to say hello or if you see someone you recognize you can tell them you saw them online.

Beer with the Bishop

I am currently sitting at Barnes & Noble’s. I was just at Theology On Tap at Brewerie. This is a four part series put on by the Erie Diocese aimed toward young adults. I was pleasently surprised. The turn out, while not huge, filled the room that they reserved which leads me to believe was greater than they had envisioned. Being a long time Catholic I have my personal view of my faith and I had a preconceived notion of the churches view of my faith.
The first speaker in the series was the Bishop, Donald Trautman. The topic was “Finding Faith in a Messy World.” Now as could be expected the initial talk was pretty dull and lecturesc. He had a series of notes and followed them pretty closely. There was then a discussion session with the group you happened to be sitting with followed by a Q & A with the Bishop. This last part was very enlightening. The Bishop was much more candid, at easy, and quite personable. After, a short period silence there where many good questions. I came way from the experience with my faith strengthened and found that churches views where quite a bit closer to my personal views than I had initially thought. I now have a renewed faith in the Church as a whole.
There are three parts left in the series:

April 20th Happy Hours: 9 to 5 speaker is Barb Lindstrom about finding faith in your occupation.

April 27th Just War Theory, Pacifism and the War in Iraq speaker is Fr. Robert Susa about “….find a realistic and faithfully Christian response to war in today’s world.”

May 4th You Think You Know, But You Don’t. What does the Catholic Church teach about sex and love? speaker is Dr. Mary Ann Rivera about “… the complexity and the gift of sexuality and relationships for today’s young adults.”

So, if you have any interest at all, I highly suggest you join the group next week. Sit back have a beer and examine your faith.

Bye Bye Mare

In prep for the upcoming draft, I took a visit to the Miami Dolphins page. Sadly, I found that on April 3rd Miami had traded their Kicker Olindo Mare to the Saints for a sixth round selection. As a long time Dolphins fan this is a sad moment for me Mare has been a rock for the Dolphins and rescued them the disaster that was Nedney. Unlike the horror I felt when they traded away Stoyanovich to the Chiefs, Feely is a proven kicker. Plus although a few years ago Mare was challenging Vanderjagt for the most accurate kicker in the past couple years his performance has fallen off a little. So good luck Olindo Mare you will always have a place in this Dolphins fan’s heart but for now the Jay Feely era beings.

ETN ePaper sucks ass

I ask you does Erie Times-News not understand that the internet is a different medium than paper? I just checked out the electronic paper because I am tired of the piles of newspapers on my dining room table. That is the worst designed piece of crap I have ever seen; I use to think the old GoErie site was bad. Who ever designed the UI for the for the ePaper should be drug out into the street and pelted with rotten fruit. It is clumsy at best. Do they really expect people to pay for this? Why not just have the articles displayed like the rest of the GoErie site. It’s not like there is some hidden secret to what makes a good news site; they done a decent job on the redesign of the main GoErie area.

P.S. This article was subject to drastic over statements do to my odd mood at time of writing.

No Ring, Small Cars, iPod Dilemma

Yesterday on Salisbury and Rosenbloom, they discussed an article on askmen.com, Top 10 Athletes Without Championships. And of course on the top of the list my favorite football player Dan Marino. Of course this spurred the discussion of who should have been on the list included on the list were Charles Barkley and Karl Malone. Left of the list NBA stars John Stockton and Patrick Ewing. I think I know why I dislike the NBA so much now none of my favorite teams or players ever won a championship. Other names I think they left off Dan Fouts and Fran Tarkenton.

GM to preview a trio smaller designs at the New York Auto Show this coming week.

GM’s bread-and-butter Chevrolet division will unveil the three Korean-designed minis—named the Trax, the Beat, and the Groove—in a play to prove that it can make stylish, fuel-efficient cars just like Honda (HMC) and Toyota (TM). The big picture for these small cars: Chevy wants to show that its brand stands for more than just trucks like the brawny Silverado pickup and gas-guzzling Suburban. Business Week

I don’t mind small; I just don’t want to see another round of 80s bland boxes.

A previous co-worker of mine just recently purchased his first iPod. He bought the all out 60 GB version. Two days ago I got a call from him while driving home. Let me just say his experience thus far has been anything but enjoyable. Upon receiving his iPod, he installed iTunes on his Gateway laptop (not going there.. yet). He had been previously using Windows Media Player. Loaded all his music into iTunes and began the long painful task cleaning up his music library, downloading album art, and inserting album artist to get around the featuring issue that crops with the mainly hip hop music he listens to. Much to his astonishment on the iPod when he went to select his favorite artist he got not one but many tupacs.
This surprised me as well seeing how I have a nano, my entire music collection won’t fit. I use a sophisticated system of genre and rating based smart playlist and live my life on shuffle. Hence going to find music by artist would be pointless because I never know who maybe on my ipod at any given time.
Back to the story though to make things worse if he open media player it would screw up changes he had made in iTunes because they were still sharing the same files. To solve his artist issue he began the tedious task removing any featuring artist form the artist field in his some 4800 songs. About when he got half way through the hard drive on the gateway decided to crap out. That is Gateway equipment for you. So then he tried installing iTunes on his desktop. iTunes’ typical install searches your entire computer for music well he had his external hard drive plugged in as well and it pulled in everyone of his songs twice, those on the desktop and his backup on the external drive. Now is that an ordeal or what? He is on his way now but I just can’t believe that Apple hasn’t enabled the ability to add album artist on the iPod. It just seems so obvious.

twatter

No, you read that right, twatter. AKA twitter chatter. I got my first dose of it today. This is were twitter goes from a simple posting mechanism to full out chat using the @ symbol so all the readers know who the message is directed to. The problem lies in if you don’t have the other person in your follow list then you only see half the conversation. and your phone vibrates every two seconds with someone else’s conversation. The plus you don’t need to remember or have your friends numbers in your phone and your other friends can butt in with their 2 cents. Another angle on this though has to be Verizon. After a couple weeks of this my guess is that unlimited message cost goes up.

AJSPS

P.S. Or maybe… chitter I guess some things don’t like the other connotation of twat.

P.S.S. This is like one giant 21st century chat room only you never leave and only see those you call friends
