Depression

For the last two years I have been in some sort of depression and quite plainly in denial of that fact. Three years ago I thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I had a good job and just bought a condo, moving out of my parents. My plans at the time were just to continue in my current job, at the time I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, try and find someone to spend my life with, start a family and eventually move back to the country(as in not in town). Pretty simple plan right? That first year on my own went well. I was doing some really interesting things at work, going out and having fun with my friends, and paid off my car loan. Then, not realizing at the time, things started to fall apart.

Politics at work slowly started ripping apart the group of great people I was working with as well as self-destructing the organization over the two years my department when from 14 people down to 5. An finally dissolved into another department. In spring of 05 I was moved to another department and through compressing and killing off programs I was doing the job of 3 people and then in May of 06 I was let go because of “budget issues.” At the same time my friends in the area all started moving away. I went from going out every weekend and playing tennis two three time a week to sitting at home watching the boob tube night in and night out.
Something else also happen last May which I don’t really want to discuss but I am paying for it until this September and possibly longer.

I was able to acquire another job without ever being unemployed. While at the time I thought that was quite lucky and do like the job (I have been able play with a lot interesting open-source technologies), I think it would have done me some good to reevaluate what I want to do with myself. The one thing this job has done for me is clarify the fact that I don’t want to be cooped up in an office with no windows staring at a computer screen all day.

Now know that I am introvert, basically what that means I tend to internalize everything and concentrate on myself and I am a very mental person. My mind is going constantly. I am always coming up with ideas: business plans, millions of things I could do if won the lottery, how I would handle different situations, if this scenarios, all the things I could do with different new media technologies, and generally how to fix my own life. However I am also the king of procrastination. So I would come up with these grand schemes, but then see all the daily tasks that I have to do just to get to the next day and get depressed. Here is the real kicker and what I continually beat myself up about. Instead bucking up getting these minor tasks done. I watch tv or waste time online or PS2/xbox. The minor tasks pile up I procrastinate more, and progressively get more depressed. Crack for a procrastinator is the great feeling you get that odd saturday. Wake up early in the morning(I am a morning person) sun is shining in, open the windows, turn up the music, and clean the entire house from top to bottom. Wake of the next Sunday everything is clean there isn’t anything that needs done sit down to a cooked breakfast and relax. Now that is rewarding. But trying to keep it clean is monotonous.

Up until this past weekend I finally thought I knew what was wrong with me. My plan was to sell my house, quit my job, and do one of 5 or 6 ideas I had come up with for 2008, because my finances is the one thing I have been able to get right. Then start my own company in 2009. Basically bide my time until 08.

Then out of the blue, I connected with an old friend. Although we only meet up 4 times in two weeks, we were also talking on the phone and emailing. During this time my normal distractions disappeared, my house was clean, I felt good, and I was thinking clearer. This all happened so quick I probably pushed things a little too fast and as it turned out she was seeing someone else as well. That relationship started to get serious and she rightly let me know that fact. While I don’t feel any ill will toward her and hope to continue to be friends, it brought something to the foreground of my mind that I never noticed before. You don’t realize how lonely you are until that hole is filled. Then gets plucked back out. Watching Scrubs last night Zach Braff’s character, went off on the other stars about how lucky they were not to be alone and in his typical style thinking to himself talked about how humans weren’t meant to be alone. Getting ready for work today I realized I was right back where I started. Clothes were piled on my bed, unread papers on the table, dishes in the sink, and other task pushed to the limit. The denial fell away I am depressed and honestly I don’t know how I am going to handle it.

P.S. I am very hesitant to post this while typing it was very therapeutic. I am not very big on showing this side of myself to the world. I don’t like making excuses nor have much patients for others who do so. Though I said I don’t know how I am going to handle it, I can see the issues and things that hold me back. What I need to do to get past them; it is just actually doing it that is hard. Sometimes I think I am too smart for my own good and over think things sometimes I wish I could just jump. No one reads this anyways.

P.S.S. This is really depressing. I am normally not so, I let things go quite easily and am a very here and now type person I only get depressed when I am reminded of my situation. For instance right now I just came up from my basement office, the sun is shining and I am eating Thai Chicken Soup at Brickhouse and feeling pretty good.

NBA insanity, MNF mixup, Tennis powers

Van Gundy has suggested that to solve the non-problem of teams dumping games to get more balls the lottery system, that all NBA teams should be entered into the lottery with equal amount of balls.

“I think every team should have an equal chance at winning the lottery, from the best team all the way down,” Van Gundy said. “I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything. I would say to take away any possible conflict of interest, everyone should have an equal chance at the top pick all the way down. That way there would be absolutely no question by anybody about anything.

“If it’s better for the game, they should do it. I never quite understood why losing is rewarded, other than (for) parity.” Houston Chronicle

What? The NBA already sucks (granted the latest in fusion of talent has helped). The season is too long, too many teams make the playoffs, and lottery system is just plain stupid. The reason the NFL draft gets so much attention is one it is america favorite sport but more importantly we haven’t had any football for two and a half months and then not again until August. The NBA holds its breathe for all of what three months. It is like they say lets take a look at what the NFL has done to be successful and do the exact opposite. The NFL takes four less teams to the playoffs and has two more teams than the NBA yet no one mentions NFL teams dumping games. Instead of putting balls in a lottery system, cut the playoff teams in half that would make the entire season more interesting, give the playoff teams a rest and do a one and done draft tournament with the remaining 22 teams the lower ranks get byes and home court advantage it would be like the NBA NIT.

ESPN has announced that Joe Theismann is out and Ron Jaworski is in as Monday Night Football Announcer. Thank God I don’t know what ESPN’s previous obsession with Theismann has been. His commentary rarely makes sense and I am tried about hearing about his injury. I don’t mean to be cold it was a tragedy and one of the most gruesome events on NFL films, but I don’t need to hear about it every week. Jaworski on the hand is always insightful, does his research, and actually thinks before he speaks. It will be nice to actually have someone who knows what they are talking about on the MNF crew. Jaws says it best

“I’m an ‘Xs-and-Os’ guy. I love breaking down the game. I love the strategy of the game,” Jaworski said in a conference call. “That’s the beauty of what I will bring to the table is that insight of ‘Xs and Os.'” ESPN

This week Roger Federer lost to same player two tournament in a row for the first time since Nadal and after tossing out some racist trash Serena Williams made mince meat of Maria Sharapova. Was going to write more but I am tired this is a pretty good rundown. Scotsman

Just joined Twitter. If you haven’t checked it out yet do so it is a pretty neat use of technology. However be patient because it seems that their servers are getting slammed from all the publicity they garnered at SXSW. Not that I should talk my site has been less than stellar lately. I have about three projects I am about to roll out as well as a new design. Until then enjoy the blue look.

Did Sprint make Bono mad?

About a month ago I saw a Sprint commercial with Ron Livingston promoting their Product(red) Razr. This inspired me write about the Product(red) Campaign. Ever since then I have neither seen the ad again nor have I been able to find the ad online. I didn’t think much off it until today when I read this blog chastising the creators of the commercial.

…I am sure that the delivery leaves a lot to be desired here but to boil it down, Sprint has decided that their customers are so shallow and self-centered there is a good chance they would rather care that the phone is red rather than helping children with AIDS.

Did I miss a memo? Did I have a stroke and no one told me? When the advertising industry decide that insulting their customers is a good idea? Maybe it is that I saw this ad so shortly after the kissing mechanics Superbowl Snickers ad that showed two auto mechanics accidentally kissing while eating the same candy bar and then ripping out some chest hair to do something “manly.”. How can Snickers watch that ad and not think that Joe small-brain male American would not be turned off by the sight of two men kissing? And then how did they think that gay Americans wouldn’t be pissed off at having that act be portrayed in such a negative light? They managed to piss off all of their customers – so who are they trying to sell to?…
Stephen Gates, Sprint decides screwing up their brand isn’t enough

That got me thinking maybe Bono and the Product(red) group were none to happy with the people at Sprint. Also, that my first article wasn’t to far off the mark. So, they are fine with the fact that sex sells but don’t tell the world that is what you are doing they might get insulted.

P.S. If anyone can find this commercial please send it to me. I think it is great that a company would come out and say exactly what we all think.

Loving Yojimbo

I recently discovered the Yojimbo organizational software by Bare Bones Software, the makers of BBEdit, and I am loving it. There are not too many tools out there that will just slip right into your workflow, make life ten times easier, and not skip a beat. I honestly don’t know how lived with out this tool. I am very much a scatter brain type worker. Many of my documents don’t get anymore organized than on the desktop or in the documents folder. And just as Spotlight and OS X Smart folders have solved my document problem Yojimbo has solved my ideas problem. No more scraps of paper, bookmarks on ten different sites, browsers, or computers, and I never could use stickies they just got in the way. Yojimbo also does passwords and serial numbers. Music & Videos iTunes, Documents Spotlight, Photos iPhoto, and now ideas Yojimbo. Something tells me that Bare Bones should be careful this seems like a prime location for Apple to move into just as they did to Konfabulator with Dashboard. Not that Yojimbo isn’t already with out its competitors. I have found two Wallet by Waterfall Software and Notebook by Circus Ponies.

Where Yojimbo is more idea centric powered by Text Editor, Wallet is more data centric like a more powerful Address Book. Wallet’s strength is that you can make as many of these data collection as you like with what ever fields you like. Where as in Yojimbo you are locked into serial numbers, passwords, or bookmarks and anything else has to be a note. That said Wallet doesn’t have the collection style setup nor the freedom you find in Yojimbo. Also, I don’t believe it has the .mac integration.

Notebook on the other hand is idea centric but also idea specific. The way this program is setup is very inventive. It is just like having an actual paper style organizer on your computer with different section, little tabs, and indices. In other words if you where one of super organized kids in school with one of those multifaceted notebooks for each subject and now that you are in computer world need that same environment this is the tool for you. On the other hand if you are like me and the those multifaceted things did absolutely nothing for you in high school, it isn’t going to help now either.

Even still Yojimbo still has room to grow. Here are a few suggestions that I have come up with. First and for most Automator actions, this list could be a lot longer but as long as they add in a few Automator actions I am sure I could do it myself. Own Smart collections right now it is limited to Flagged Items and Recent Items. and you can create Tag Collections. I would really like to be able create collections based on any field similar to iTunes. Tag Collection Auto Drops – be able to add Tag Collections to the Auto Drop so that when used it will automatically add those tags to the new item. Support for images, not talking iPhoto style organization, more along the lines of that is a really neat image I might want to use that in my blog. .Mac Access online, syncing is nice but online access would be awesome especially for bookmarks. Dashboard Widget – despise the fact that I always have to have Yojimbo open would love a Dashboard Widget. Oh please, oh please, oh please develop an iPhone version. Multiple Flags similar to Outlook alarm red is nice but caution yellow, don’t worry green or handled it check mark would be nice. And finally more options or ability to create your own types like Wallet. I really want to create a grocery items type.

If you own a mac take a look at Yojimbo, if you own multiple macs and have a .Mac Account Get Yojimbo.
